Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic also a speaker who is Canadian. She founded Feminist Frequency a website that hosts videos and commentary analyzing depictions of women's roles in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American blogger and media critic that has received awards for her work, is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit educational website which examines female representations in popular culture narratives. The challenge of destroying stereotypes regarding women is her main focus. But, she also highlights issues related to specifically targeted harassment online against women and other minorities that have been marginalized. A graduate in the field of political and social thinking from York University Sarkeesian is also well-known as a sought-after speaker and she has delivered speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO Festival as well as the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. She was fascinated by feminist issues, gender and gender equality from a very young time. When she graduated in 2009, in university she started her Feminist Frequency site. She was a young woman determined to make the series of videos on the internet which would explore how gender is represented in video games. But, she was the target of cyber-bullying. However, the attacks did not discourage her. She was only able to strengthen her position as a journalist who is feminist. She has won many awards for her contributions to feminism. Anita Sarkeesian, a media journalist who has received many awards, and also founded Feminist Frequency which is an educational nonprofit that studies how women are represented in popular culture narratives.
